Die quatemäre Schicht wird am Ende des Tapers vollständig bis zur darunter befindlichen InP-Schicht abgetragen, die als Detektionsschicht für das Abtragen dient.

At the end of the taper, the quaternary layer is removed completely down to the InP layer beneath it. The InP layer acts as a detector layer for the removal.
